I first saw the trailer for TLC’s new reality series “Breaking Amish” while watching my beloved “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” I was immediately intriqued. The truth is, I’m always intrigued by cultures and places that don’t have access to a local Macy’s or soft serve ice cream. #Brat
On the first episode, “Jumping the Fence,” we get to know our new reality tea mix, Jeremiah, Kate, Abe, Rebecca, and Sabrina. All have one thing in common a burning curiosity about the world outside of their respective farms. We see them break the news to close friends and relatives about their decision to relocate to New York City. We also hear of the harsh ramifications for broadening ones world view, which is “shunning” or banishment from their homes as they are all told in one form or another that if they leave, they are not to return…(ouuuuuuch!)
It was very hard not to pass judgement on the family dynamics going on during the first episode. I have family members who in my mind I wish I could “shun” but still can’t bring myself to do so. Watching Abe’s mother not even leave her seat to give him a hug when he left for the big city, was just visually ICE!
I am so uberly curious as to how they adjust to the biggest city on earth! Their first dawg, their first club experience.. etc. The teasers to upcoming episodes elude to a Real Wold Vegas dynamic, and I can’t wait to the transformation!
Sidebar: Sabrina has a striking resemblance to Snooki. She said that she was adopted by her Mennonite family, so…. they may be long lost cousins or something?
Breaking Amish airs on TLC on Sunday’s 10/9c
