One of the most funk-a-licious bands of all time, Cameo is behind so many funk dance classics besides “Candy” like “Word Up”, “Back and Forth”, and “She’s Strange”.
Cameo started off with 13 members and a different name in 1974. The group called themselves the New York City players before changing their name to Cameo to avoid a lawsuit from the Ohio Players, another popular soul band.
It was in 1983 when the group released an album called Style with Cameo front man Larry Blackmon’s signature “Oooow!” on the tracks which gave the group a groovy new sound that meshed well with the time.
